Sew Along Schedule
Week 2: Block A (2 Blocks)
Are you ready to dive into some foundation paper piecing?! Foundation Paper Piecing (FPP) is a great technique to create blocks with unusual and/or ultra precise piecing, and the first festive bauble is a quick and rewarding block to start with.
Goals for Week 2
Piece two versions of block A
If you are interested in experimenting with fabric/color placement, I encourage you to try out your choices prior to stitching using the downloadable coloring sheets included with your pattern. You can access them on The (not so) Dramatic Life’s Festive Baubles page using the password printed on page two of your pattern.
Fussy Cutting Potential on Block A
For experienced (or adventurous!) foundation paper piecers Block A may be a fun place to try some fussy cutting. The squares across the block finish at 1” square which accommodates lots of small prints. For the block below, I used a combination of reindeer and plus sign fussy cutting, and I think it gives the block a lot of personality!
My favorite way to handle this type of fussy cutting is to precut my pieces as precisely as possible. In this case, I cut 1-1/2” squares, making sure to center the motif I wanted to feature. When cutting FPP pieces this precisely, it is important to place and sew them very carefully on your templates to ensure that the seam allowances maintain a 1/4” on all sides.
That's it for Week 2, we'll be back next Monday, October 19th for Week 3: Block B! Don't forget to tag us on Instagram and use the hashtag #festivebaublesquiltalong so we can all cheer on your progress!
